Alien Ears is the longest-running independent custom in-ear monitor company in the world, proudly family-owned and operated by working musicians for over 19 years.  Based in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, we’ve built our legacy by crafting monitors that are tested on real stages—not just in sterile labs.

Our mission is simple: “Save the Hearing.” We believe every musician deserves high-quality, affordable in-ear monitors that protect their ears and elevate their performance. That’s why we offer pro-grade gear at near cost, without compromising on sound or durability.

What Sets Alien Ears Apart

  • We’re a real lab—not a reseller.  Unlike companies that outsource production to hearing aid labs, we build everything in-house using proprietary drivers and components designed specifically for live music.
  • We don’t just engineer sound—we live it.  Every Alien Ears model is tested at our own gigs, refined through real-world use until the sound signature is dialed in for clarity, punch, and comfort.
  • No flashy endorsements—just tour-proven gear.  Our monitors are trusted by touring musicians worldwide, not because we hand them out at conventions, but because they deliver night after night.
  • Full-service support.  We offer custom builds, repairs, reshells, and personalized service from people who understand the demands of live performance.

Impressions

Can My Audiologist Use Their Own Impression Material?

Yes — absolutely.  If you’re visiting an audiologist or ENT for ear impressions, they may prefer to use their own impression material. That’s perfectly fine and won’t affect your order.

What to Bring With You

To make the process smooth, be sure to bring our Audiologist Take-Along Sheet with you.  It includes all the specs and instructions they’ll need to create impressions that meet our standards.

You can download it here:  Alien Ears Audiologist Sheet (PDF)

A Word of Caution

Most audiologists are honest, caring professionals — but we’ve seen a few cases where things didn’t go as planned.

Some audiologists have financial partnerships with competing brands, and may try to steer you toward their products. In some cases:

  • They’ve told customers they’d “send in the impressions” — but sent them to a competitor instead
  • Weeks later, customers were contacted by that competitor and quoted double the price of Alien Ears monitors

How to Protect Yourself

  • Make sure you leave with your impressions in hand — don’t let anyone mail them for you unless you trust them completely
  • Bring the Audiologist Sheet so they know exactly what you need
  • Print and bring your signed invoice/signature page (sent to your email after ordering) — this confirms your Alien Ears order and helps avoid confusion

Summary

  • Yes, your audiologist can use their own impression material
  • Bring the Audiologist Sheet and your signed invoice
  • Politely insist on taking your impressions with you
  • If anything feels off, trust your gut and ask questions

We’re here to help every step of the way — and we want you to get the best monitors possible, without the upsell or detour.

Category: Impressions

Thousands of Alien Ears customers have successfully taken their own ear impressions using our free, professional-grade kit — and we’re proud to offer that option.

But taking impressions should be done by a licensed audiologist or ENT

Why We Still Recommend a Professional

While our kits are designed for accuracy and ease of use, they’re intended for professional application.  That’s why we require a signed waiver before shipping — to ensure customers understand the risks and responsibilities involved.

Ear impressions involve inserting material deep into the canal, and while most people do just fine, a trained professional can ensure:

  • Proper depth and coverage
  • Safe technique
  • Optimal results for custom monitor fit

The Bottom Line

  • Our kits are free and high-end, but intended for professional use
  • We strongly recommend seeing a licensed audiologist or ENT for best results
  • A signed waiver is required before ordering the kit

A Surprising Fact

We occasionally receive impressions from audiologists or ENTs that aren’t usable — about 5% fall short due to improper depth, shape, or technique.

Why Alien Ears Is Different

We’re proud to be the only company that sends out high-end impression kits for free — because we believe great monitors should be accessible, not overpriced.

Category: Impressions

Once we receive your impressions, we will update your tracking system (you will get a url to it when you order) and text (if you opt in) or send you an email confirming the date of arrival and whether they’re approved for production. If there’s an issue, we’ll let you know right away.

Monitor Care

Category: Monitor Care

Monitor Care 101

Essential Instructions for Getting the Most Out of Your In-Ear Monitors

Protecting Your Hearing and Your Monitors

  • Always use a fast limiter in your signal chain.  This is critical for preventing sudden volume spikes that can damage your hearing and blow your monitor drivers. A limiter acts as a safety net, especially in live or unpredictable audio environments.
  • Route the cord behind your shirt when possible.  This helps prevent accidental snags or pulls that could damage the cord or yank the monitors from your ears.
  • Store your monitors in their case when not in use.  Leaving them out increases the risk of physical damage, dust exposure, or misplacement.

How to Insert Your Monitors Properly

  1. Identify left and right monitors.  Most are labeled; if not, check the cord orientation.
  2. Insert the right monitor using your right hand.  Hold the earpiece so the cable points downward.
  3. Lift your outer ear (pinna) gently.  This opens the ear canal for easier insertion.
  4. Insert the canal tip slowly and rotate into place.  You should feel a snug fit—almost like it “snaps” in.
  5. Wrap the cord over your ear.  The built-in soft wire lets you shape it like an eyeglass hook for secure placement.

Daily Care and Long-Term Maintenance

Following these simple habits will extend the life of your monitors and ensure consistent performance:

  • Wipe down the earpieces with a soft cloth after each use.
  • Avoid exposing monitors to extreme temperatures (e.g., hot car dashboards).
  • Never immerse monitors in water or attempt to clean the ear canals with liquid.
  • Protect monitors from impact—dropping or sharp blows can cause internal damage.
  • Always store them in the provided case when not in use.
  • Use only the provided cleaning tool to clear the sound bores. Never insert other objects.
  • Regularly inspect for earwax buildup.  To clean, gently insert the cleaning tool into the canal and remove any wax.

What Not to Do

  • Do not pull monitors out by the cord.  This stresses the wire and can cause internal damage.
  • Do not remove detachable cords after every use.  Frequent removal can loosen the plug over time. Only detach when necessary.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.  Clean the exterior with a mild soap-and-water solution or rubbing alcohol.

Final Thoughts

Clean monitors in a safe environment will deliver years of reliable performance and hearing satisfaction. Treat them like precision instruments—because they are.

Happy Monitoring!

Monitor/Product Questions

Yes — single monitors are available.
You’ll find them listed at the bottom of our main monitor product page.

When Would You Use a Single Monitor?

Single monitors are typically ordered as replacements for lost or damaged units.  If you’ve misplaced one side or had a monitor fail outside warranty, you don’t need to buy a full new set — we’ve got you covered.

A Word of Caution

We don’t recommend using a single monitor in one ear for regular performance or rehearsal.

Why?  Because it can lead to long-term hearing damage due to unbalanced exposure.  When one ear is protected and the other is exposed to full stage volume, your brain compensates — and that can push your open ear into dangerous territory over time.

Best Practice

If you’re down a monitor, grab a single replacement to restore your full setup.  Your ears — and your mix — will thank you.

Need help matching your model or color? Reach out and we’ll make sure your replacement fits perfectly.

Ambient ports (also called pressure vents) are small tubes built into your in-ear monitors. They run from the outside of the shell down the canal toward your eardrum. We now insert a special filter into the tube to help retain some low-end response — but there are trade-offs.

The Upside of Ambient Ports

  • They let in outside sound, so you don’t feel completely isolated
  • You can hear audience reactions, stage chatter, or cues from bandmates

The Downside

  • Ambient ports only fit in the AE1 and AE2 models due to space limitations
  • When the port is open, you lose almost all low-end response — yes, all
  • Even with our special filter, you’ll still lose a significant amount of low-end

A Better Solution: Ambient Mics

Personally, I use an ambient mic that feeds into my personal monitor mix. It gives me full control and lets me hear everything clearly — without sacrificing low-end.

  • You don’t need a fancy mic for this. Any basic room mic will do.
  • A PZM (pressure zone mic) works well because of its wide pickup pattern
  • Many venues already have ambient mics installed — talk to your sound tech

Pro tip: Bring your sound guy a Starbucks or some kind of peace offering.  It helps. You know what I mean.

One Last Word of Advice

Please don’t waste $1,100 on a belt pack with a built-in mic and limiter marketed as an “ambient solution.”  You can build a better setup for a fraction of the cost — and keep your low-end intact.

Find Your Perfect In-Ear Monitor

Choosing the right in-ear monitor isn’t just about specs — it’s about finding the sound that fits you. Whether you’re laying down grooves, leading worship, or shredding solos, your monitor should match your style, your mix, and your role on stage.

Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

 Entry-Level & Versatile Picks

AE1- Perfect for communications or anywhere you need isolation but still need to hear input.

AE2 – ?  A well-balanced, entry-level monitor with clean response across the spectrum. Ideal for newcomers or anyone needing a reliable, neutral mix.

AE3 – ?️  Dual low drivers and a full-range crossover give this model extra punch in the low end. A great step up for performers who want more depth without losing clarity.

AFR3 (Proprietary) – ?  A triple full-range setup with excellent clarity. Perfect for most musicians — except bassists and drummers who need deeper low-end response.

 Monitors with Enhanced Low-End

AE3
G8 – ?️  Think AFR3 clarity with added warmth. Delivers rich lows and crisp highs — great for rhythm-heavy roles. the work horse of the AE family

G12 (Proprietary) – ?  A powerhouse monitor with pristine clarity and a fat low end. Universally loved — suitable for any musician, any genre.

G16 – ?  Our flagship model. Loud, proud, and sonically immersive. Studio-grade clarity meets massive low-end for a truly elevated live mix.

For Drummers & Bassists

Custom molds offer isolation — which means you’ll start mixing like you’re in the studio. Kick, bass, and full mix need to be present and powerful.

Recommended: G8 or G16 These models deliver the low-end punch and transient response you need to lock in the groove.
you could use an AE3 but for the price difference the G8 is superior in clarity and low end.

For Keyboardists

Church players (pads, piano, organ, strings):  → AFR3, G8, G12, G16 — for warmth, clarity, and harmonic detail.

Prog rockers (Moogs, Mellotrons, ARPs):  → AFR3, G8, G12, G16 — for dynamic range and vintage synth grit.

 For Vocalists

→ AFR3, G12, G16  On a budget? The AE2 is a solid fallback. (We get it — vocalists aren’t always rolling in gear budgets.)

For Guitarists

Heavy players (Marshall stacks, drop D, headbangers):  → AE3 for raw clarity, AFR3 to make your tone pop, G8 for warmth  → Singing too? Go G8,G12 or G16 for vocal space and balance.

Versatile players (clean, crunch, lead):  → AFR3, G8, G12 — the G12 is our top pick for guitarists who want it all.

For Strings (Violin, Fiddle, etc.)

→ AFR3 and the G8 is our top sellers for string players thanks to its clarity and responsiveness.  → Want more low-end body and clarity? Try G8, G12, or G16 depending on how bold you want to go.
