One of the first questions people run into when shopping for a custom in-ear monitor is driver count: single, dual, triple, four, six, eight — what actually changes as that number goes up, and how many do you actually need?
What a Driver Does
Each driver in a monitor reproduces a portion of the frequency spectrum. A single-driver monitor uses one full-range driver to handle everything — lows, mids, and highs together. As driver count increases, monitors typically split that work up: dedicated drivers for bass, dedicated drivers for midrange (often where vocals and guitars live), and dedicated drivers for high-frequency detail, tied together with a crossover that blends them smoothly.
Single-Driver: The Entry Point
Our AE1 uses a single balanced armature driver for clear, focused sound and is a common starting point for vocalists, worship leaders, speakers, and anyone whose main need is clear, intelligible monitoring rather than a full-range mix — hearing your own voice and a click track clearly matters more here than deep sub-bass extension.
Dual and Triple-Driver: Fuller Range
Stepping up to our AE2 (dual-driver) or AE3 and AFR3 (triple-driver) typically adds low-end response and separates the frequency ranges more cleanly, so bass, guitar, and vocals don’t compete with each other in the mix. This range tends to suit musicians who need to hear a fuller band mix — not just their own part — without losing detail.
Four-Plus Drivers: Tour-Grade Detail
Our G8 uses four drivers per side — including dual ported lows for tighter, punchier bass — alongside separate midrange and high drivers. This is where monitors start handling complex, busy mixes — full bands, in-ear click and guide tracks, multiple instruments — without the mix feeling muddy or congested.
Six to Eight Drivers: Maximum Separation
At the top end, our G12 (six drivers) and G16 (eight drivers per ear) mean finer frequency splitting and more headroom for a detailed, high-definition mix across the full spectrum. This tier is generally aimed at touring professionals running complex in-ear mixes who want the most precise, detailed monitoring available.
